Insights from Nintendo Fan Network

Starting off, thanks for your time today, and why don't we get started with having you briefly introduce yourselves to give us a background that brings us to where we are today. I'm Zach Fountain, Director in our Network Business here at Nintendo of America. I'm responsible for bringing Nintendo TVii to North America.<img aria-hidden="true" src="https://assets.nintendo.com/image/upload/f_auto/q_auto/dpr_auto/Microsites/iwata-asks/wiiu/reggieasks/photo2" class="photo">

Zach, why don't you touch a little bit also on some of the other entertainment projects you've worked on here at Nintendo, especially some of the activities prior to the Nintendo 3DS system, as well as the work with Nintendo 3DS.

My team has worked on projects which allow consumers to experience Nintendo platforms in public places such as airplanes, airports, hotels, coffee shops, restaurants, sports stadiums, and more. 
One of these projects which offered us insights for Nintendo TVii was our experience with the Nintendo Fan Network1, a service for baseball fans at Safeco Field, home of the Seattle Mariners2. Nintendo Fan Network enables fans to use their Nintendo handheld to access live stats, watch video, order food to their seat, play games with others in the stadium, and more – all from their seat.
 
At the time, the idea of a second screen to augment a live experience was a new concept. Some wondered if it was a distraction, but it became a very popular service with fans. In retrospect, it was an early indicator that second screens would become a standard to enhance the main viewing experience. We were able to leverage our experience with Nintendo Fan Network as we built the sports experience for Nintendo TVii.

That's great. Thanks, Zach. And then Masaki.

My name is Masaki Okahata. I'm a project manager working on Zach's team, and my responsibility in this project is to manage the technical aspects, like working closely with our partner company, i.TV, and other developers and groups that have supported Nintendo TVii.<img aria-hidden="true" src="https://assets.nintendo.com/image/upload/f_auto/q_auto/dpr_auto/Microsites/iwata-asks/wiiu/reggieasks/photo3" class="photo">

That's great. And also before this project, you were also involved with some Nintendo out-of-home projects3. Why don't you touch on those for a minute?

3: Out-of-home projects: Projects that enable consumers to experience Nintendo platforms in various public venues.

Yes. Before starting this project, I was working on the Nintendo Zone project. This service enables owners of Nintendo 3DS to take their systems to nearly 30,000 public locations to access special promotional content, and obtain free access to Nintendo 3DS network features.

It gave you experience working with a variety of different partners, partners who have a variety of different wants and needs in how to combine all that to bring something interesting to life.

Yes. There were many different partners required to bring the Nintendo Zone service to life. And since there are even more partners for Nintendo TVii, this was a very valuable experience.

Yes, I'm Brad Pelo, the CEO and founder of i.TV4. And we partnered with Nintendo in the creation of Nintendo TVii.

So why don't you talk a little bit, Brad, in terms of what is i.TV?

i.TV is a company that was established with the idea that television was ripe for reinvention. We wanted to help people discover what to watch among the growing options, simplify the delivery or tuning to their show and then enable viewers to engage with the show itself and other viewers using their second screens, like the Wii U GamePad. 
For the past 60 years we've only had a few over-the-air broadcast channels, but now we have thousands of cable and satellite channels and many VOD and over-the-top offerings5. With so many choices, we still choose what to watch via a spreadsheet style grid that appears on our TV screen. I believed that with smart devices in our hands, we could now have a custom entertainment guide for each viewer in the home, but with an added twist that the smart device could also act as a remote control.
 
Finally, TV viewers want to engage with content on a second screen that is related to the show they are watching. We also believe there is an opportunity for communities of viewers to come together and interact on the second screen. Our mission is to help people find and watch TV shows and movies and then create engaging content and social experiences around moments in the show.

One Integrated Experience

Great. So as we talk about Nintendo TVii, why don't we start with the consumer proposition. What is Nintendo TVii and why is it something that has the potential to really reshape the consumer's experience with video content? Zach, why don't you start.

We are watching more video than ever. We now watch on average five hours every day, but how we're consuming it is becoming more complicated. cable and satellite TV, which 104 million households enjoy, now has hundreds of channels. We have a growing amount of time-shifted viewing through DVR, and we have growing services like Netflix5, Amazon Instant Video6, and Hulu Plus7 that are providing more ways to watch video.
 
There's great content, and a multitude of viewing options, but the process of finding and controlling a program has become too complicated. Then, once you are watching, most viewers are now using a second screen to augment the experience, both socially and in the search of information.
 
Nintendo TVii addresses this changing landscape by bringing together everything you need – a personalized guide, a super remote, and a social TV experience – into one seamless application on the GamePad. This makes watching TV easier and fun.

And so Brad, from your perspective, you've been experimenting in this space, as you mentioned, with smartphones, with i-devices. Why is the GamePad such a great tool for this wonderful, integrated second screen experience?

Well, the Wii U and the GamePad provide the first platform of its type that brings together your over-the-top services like Amazon Instant Video, Netflix and Hulu Plus with all your cable and satellite channels through a common interface. And since the GamePad typically remains in the living room, instead of someone's bedroom, bag, or pocket, it's ideal for the entire family. With this shared control in the home, and each family member with their own Mii, we have these personalized profiles that everyone can setup of what you like to watch. So now you've got the ability to quickly see what's on and upcoming for all your favorite shows and sports – all from a personalized experience on the GamePad.<img aria-hidden="true" src="https://assets.nintendo.com/image/upload/f_auto/q_auto/dpr_auto/Microsites/iwata-asks/wiiu/reggieasks/photo5" class="photo">

Masaki, a question for you. What was it like working with an experienced partner like i.TV?

It's been a great learning experience. Bringing Nintendo TVii to consumers on Wii U has required great collaboration between Nintendo, i.TV, and other development partners. Nintendo and i.TV share a common vision for innovation, and I've felt this passion from i.TV on a daily basis.

Zach, you really were a key individual in selecting a partner for Nintendo TVii. From your perspective, why was i.TV the perfect partner?

It really comes down to a shared vision. There are many companies that are approaching this space differently — there's many that are doing just a program guide, there are some that consider themselves just a remote control company, and there are some that are only in social TV. And i.TV shared the vision with Nintendo that there needs to be one, unifying experience that brings together a personalized program guide, remote control, and a social experience, all on one second screen. In addition, many companies we evaluated were designing UIs that we believed were too complicated for everyone. We wanted to build an experience that everyone would find simple and intuitive, and i.TV was also committed to that philosophy.

So now, Brad, I'm going to put you on the spot. What's it been like working with Nintendo as a partner?

The relationship has been highly collaborative. We've been able to benefit from Nintendo's experience about what makes experiences  simple and fun for all ages. Combine that with i.TV's expertise working with massive amounts of complex information — thousands of channels, TV providers, video services, and all the information around every program you can watch — and then make it really smart, so it can be highly personalized. Together, I think we've come up with something that's really magical, because it's so simple that my little 5-year-old daughter, my own little focus group, can use this system, and yet my teenage boys also love to use it for its deeper experiences–especially with sports.

That's great. So let me shift gears a little bit and talk about why Nintendo TVii is such a regionally driven project, touching on the differences with regional TV habits and why this product fundamentally looks the way it does and why it looks different than what might be in other Nintendo regions. And to that end, Masaki, let me start with you, because you've spent time in Japan. Masaki, you grew up in Japan.

Yes. I was born in Japan, and grew up there. I then moved to the United States 8 years ago with my family.

Then you know that TV environment. Obviously, you know the TV environment here in North America. Talk a little bit about why Nintendo TVii has to be different regionally.

In order to explain that, I think I have to explain the market differences—market landscape differences between Japan and the U.S. market. In Japan, the majority of people watch TV over the air and the number of channels is very limited. Most people only watch a few channels, versus in the US, where there are so many cable providers and satellite providers. You have hundreds of channels to choose from, and also the Internet-based VOD services that have become mainstream. So the industry landscape is very different. That's the main reason why we needed to build different experiences in each region.<img aria-hidden="true" src="https://assets.nintendo.com/image/upload/f_auto/q_auto/dpr_auto/Microsites/iwata-asks/wiiu/reggieasks/photo6" class="photo">

And, Zach, any other points from your perspective on why this project had to be so specific to the various regions?

As Masaki points out, the market for watching TV is different globally. And if you also consider sports, the differences become even more pronounced. However, what has been special about Nintendo TVii is how the development team in Japan embraced these differences. They had a truly worldwide vision with foundational consistency while also supporting local market dynamics. So from the very beginning, the NCL team was tremendous in understanding Nintendo of America's vision for our market while supporting the development of the platform and tools necessary to deliver it.

Right. One of the things you touched on, Zach, was social, and social is a key part of the Nintendo TVii experience. Let me start, Brad, with you. Why was social such an integral part of this product proposition from your perspective?

Well, let me start by telling you an interesting story about our beginnings. When we first released our TV guide for smartphones, it happened to be the presidential election in the Unites States four years ago, and the week of the launch, we were watching people use a new feature in our app where you could post a review about what you were watching. During the presidential debate, they were debating with each other—the users, in this case—back and forth by using the review feature, which was not intended for that purpose at all. Then it dawned on us that we'd built this great TV guide, but now people wanted to be able to engage around what they were watching. And so we began development of something beyond just the guide itself. We know today that the number one trending topics on social networks every night happen to be TV topics. And what's lacking in those experiences—those broader experiences—is context. So it's this big crowd roar every night during prime time, but when they're saying "great play" or "I can't believe that happened," we have no idea what that's related to—what game, who are they talking about, etc. So we had to build a social experience that provided context. It had to be synchronized with the television experience, and allow viewers to share not just broadly in the one-hour program, but in each moment as the program progressed.

That's great. You know, the point you raise about activities happening today, where folks are socially interacting about shows, but it literally is a shout in the dark, because you have no sense as to what it is that they're referring to. Right? I've got a friend of mine who is posting about various shows on their Facebook8 page and I have no clue what she's referring to, so it's this one-way monologue that as a reader you're looking at and saying, "Boy, what does this mean?" But by tagging it—right, with the TV Tag feature—tying it to the specific situation, all of a sudden it has a lot more meaning.

It's Magic!

Let's talk about TV Tags. What is it, how are we bringing it to the market, what are some of the net benefits from a consumer standpoint? So, Zach, why don't you start in terms of what is this concept that we're calling TV Tags?

The concept really is around experiencing moments as they unfold in the program as you're watching. In a sporting event, it may be an exciting play. In a drama, it may be a plot twist. In a comedy, it may be a hilarious moment. As you're watching, moments unfold. The GamePad and Nintendo TVii capture these moments that we select. Once those moments exist, viewers can engage socially or deepen their experience with information about what just happened.<img aria-hidden="true" src="https://assets.nintendo.com/image/upload/f_auto/q_auto/dpr_auto/Microsites/iwata-asks/wiiu/reggieasks/photo8" class="photo">

How did that come about? I mean, was it something that, Brad, you had seen in your experiences? Was it something, Zach and Masaki, from our perspectives that we were thinking about? Because it seems like it's a very unique feature of Nintendo TVii.

Well, we had actually built several models of social television experiences over about a two-year period, and about the time we engaged with Nintendo, we were at a point where we had done some initial tests around this tag concept. And so we presented the framework for it to the working team as we were collaborating with Nintendo. I would say that it's the outgrowth of trying ten other things that didn't work quite as well and discovering the one that did.

One area of TV Tag that was built during our collaboration was the sports experience. It's a special part of Nintendo TVii where the right half of the screen on the GamePad discusses moments as they unfold—it could be about a great touchdown catch, or a controversial call. And as we previously discussed, viewers can then engage with those moments socially and in the search for more information. Then, the left half of the GamePad deepens the experience —a shot chart in basketball, a drive chart in football, all the stats, scores from around the league—all on the GamePad and synchronized with the game you're watching.

Yeah. And when the big play happens—instead of a shout in the dark on a social network, you can use the GamePad, and engage with others in the context of the show. We like it, we don't like it, we can trash talk our friend on Miiverse—all through this unified experience.

I'm a big sports fan and whenever I'm talking about Nintendo TVii, highlighting the sports applications is a really interesting area. For me, the thing that I find just so engaging is being able to zero in on a sporting event and to literally scroll back and get a sense of "What did I miss?" Right? You can see the score, but you don't have a sense of what it is that you've missed and that feature within Nintendo TVii, to me, is a real wow, in terms of something different that it delivers. Let's talk a little bit about the nature of Nintendo TVii as a living, breathing service—and by that I mean what we will launch with will continue to evolve, and it'll be even better down the road. Let's start, Zach, with you. From a North American perspective, what Nintendo TVii will have on launch of the application and what are some of the added features that'll be coming in the days, weeks, and months ahead?

As we highlighted earlier, driving simplicity is critical for Nintendo TVii, and that starts with unifying all the different ways that people are watching video. That means compatibility with cable and satellite—that 104 million households use—with time-shifted viewing, on DVR, and in popular video services: Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus and Netflix. As we look at those three categories, linear TV9 or traditional cable and satellite represent 98 percent of video viewing (Nielson Q4, 2011).
 
So you begin there. This is a critical part of Nintendo TVii and a part that other platforms normally don't support. So that will be fully functional at launch. If you have cable and satellite, Nintendo TVii will be functional with your cable and satellite provider at launch. For DVR, we've previously mentioned TiVo10. TiVo will be coming on board in January. And for the video applications, Hulu Plus and Amazon Instant Video will be supported at launch, with Netflix expected to be available in early 2013.

Great. Masaki, from your perspective as you look to the future in terms of some of the future integration, what are some of the things that you see and can anticipate in terms of how the service could get better?

We have many plans to evolve the service. For example, we would like to continue to add more integration with cable and satellite services.

Right. Brad, how about from your perspective as you think about some of the things that you look forward to integrating in the future iterations of Nintendo TVii? What types of things could you anticipate?

Well, I think that we'll continue to see more and more content integrated, broadening our choices. I think we'll also find brand new ways to engage. And those'll run the gamut from better ways to engage with my friends—bringing my universe close,—,—,and then also new ways in which the outside world can engage me. 
You know, a show producer, for example, would love to engage more with his audience? He might enjoy getting feedback from the audience in real time. He might enjoy providing additional information around a show that we at large might not have access to and as a result couldn't be part of without TV Tag. So I think we're going to see content collaboration from many sources and then contextual content from the producers of the shows themselves.

So how many TV shows will be supported by TV Tag? Masaki?

We will cover the top 100 shows in the U.S. market at launch.

To me, the interesting part about this is that it's not only based on ratings, but it's going to be based on collectively what Nintendo TVii  think is hot, what we think has momentum, and what we think our audience might find interesting.

Brad, talk a little bit about the mechanics of "How are we doing this?" How are you doing it, because you're really going to be providing this service in terms of the support to make it happen.

Let me point out that we're not only covering the top 100 shows on launch, but we're covering the pro sports of football and basketball, and NCAA basketball and football as well, so you're literally going to have hundreds of events covered every week with TV Tags. The moments in TV Tag, while informative, are really like little mini water coolers during the course of the show. So it's just an opportunity now for everyone watching the show to join in the conversation at these different moments. So think of these like little markers on the trail. The marker tells you here's the moment, here's some interesting information, now let's all join in the conversation.

Right. So then, the social element of this, in terms of a marker's been planted representing a key moment for a particular show. Zach, talk a little bit about, then, the social interaction. So how is it brought to bear? What can the consumer expect to see?

They can expect to make a comment and that'll be shared out, based on their settings, to Facebook, Miiverse, and Twitter. They can also emote, and their Mii will reflect this emotion in Miiverse.  In addition to engaging socially, viewers can also access information related to moments. The TV Tag curators will tag fun and useful content. And in the future, viewers will be able to contribute their own content as well.

That's cool. One of the things that I was exposed to that, again, for me was really fantastic is the collision between Miiverse and Nintendo TVii in terms of the potential now for communities within Miiverse to show up around particular shows. Masaki, maybe you could touch on that, because again I think until people see it, it's one of these that is tough to understand what that might look like.

Yeah, in the Miiverse application, there's a Nintendo TVii community, and you can see all the posts from our Nintendo TVii users. And within the posts, we use the topic tags for each post so that you can actually select posts that were posted from certain shows. For example, like Modern Family, you can see all the posts that people posted from the Modern Family show in TV Tag. In Miiverse, you can see all those posts, and much, much more.<img aria-hidden="true" src="https://assets.nintendo.com/image/upload/f_auto/q_auto/dpr_auto/Microsites/iwata-asks/wiiu/reggieasks/photo10" class="photo">

Yes. So just like how Miiverse is creating a community for gamers to interact and talk about their fun favorite moments around New Super Mario Bros. U, for example, now there is the potential for these Miiverse communities to be around particular TV shows, which again, as a consumer, is magical in terms of finding people like me to engage in a conversation around something I have a lot of enjoyment from.

Just to add something special about Nintendo TViis Miiverse integration: Masaki is describing the experience within the Miiverse application, but of course we know that there are many different layers to Miiverse. What also excites me is how the buzz about TV shows, movies, and sports will be integrated on the WaraWara Plaza. It's a great way to get the buzz about what everyone's talking about regarding what's on TV. Imagine the Super Bowl, when there are over a hundred million viewers and 80 percent of them, historically, have been on a second screen, and everyone's commenting. You'll see all of the buzz not just about the game, but also reactions to TV commercials, and comments about the half-time show. The WaraWara Plaza will not only be a great place to see the buzz on games, but also what's on TV as well.

A One-Stop-Shop for Everyone

Now with that context, another question for you. As consumers prepare to engage with Nintendo TVii, Brad, maybe you could help share a little bit as to what this experience is going to be like, from a linear TV perspective, from a DVR perspective, and from a video service perspective.

So the easy way to think about it is that each person who approaches the console will have established their own profile about what they love to watch.  Then you're presented with all the sources, whether it's that show playing on television—live linear television—or that show's available from one of the video service providers you subscribe to on the console, or maybe you've recorded that show and it's sitting on your local DVR. So I would select the show, it would be presented then with the sources for where I can watch that show. If it's on linear television, simply tap the GamePad. The infrared that's built into the GamePad will actually fire off and change the channel for you and immediately you would see the show on television.

So that's an example right there where, because of the functionality built right into the GamePad, it allows this to happen, versus what other entities in the space are trying to do that don't necessarily have that built-in technology.

That's right. The infrared is a bridge builder across all of your entertainment solutions because they all use infrared. If we waited until it was a world when we were all digitally integrated, we'd wait a long time. That will come one day, but for now, the GamePad provides that great uniformity to control all my services. 
The second thing is if I went to a television show that I wanted to watch and it wasn't available in linear television, but it was available through one of the video services on the console, then I would simply select that show from the brand that I choose to subscribe to or I want to purchase from, and we would then launch that video experience from the console itself. So you'd physically leave Nintendo TVii while we then launch that service and we'd take you directly to that program, so that you don't have to browse through the application to find it. You're simply taken directly to it and then you initiate the video playback from there.
 Of course, if you've recorded that show already—maybe it was last night's episode—it's going to be on your DVR. And so selecting it from the GamePad at that point means that we'll actually digitally communicate with the TiVo unit that you own and we'll start the playback immediately from there. In the future, of course, we hope to add support for other DVRs, but in early 2013, you'll see the integration with TiVo.

That's great. One of the things that Brad touched on is the personalization piece and, Zach, maybe you could talk a little bit about that. You know, how is the personalization feature so different, so distinctive, and as a parent, why should I feel good about this new service?<img aria-hidden="true" src="https://assets.nintendo.com/image/upload/f_auto/q_auto/dpr_auto/Microsites/iwata-asks/wiiu/reggieasks/photo11" class="photo">

Since Nintendo experiences are often used by the entire family, each Mii can create and manage their own profile. When you first enter Nintendo TVii, you set up your profile: the ways that you watch, content that you love, your social integration, and other settings as well. 
Your profile is full of personalization. Favorite TV shows, movies, sports teams, social networks, favorite TV channels, and much more.
 
And then Nintendo TVii takes all your interests and makes finding and watching programs simple. First, Nintendo TVii tells you what, among your favorites, is on right now, is on in the near future, and what you've watched.
 We've also added the ability for parents to implement parent controls. They can select maximum TV show and movie ratings that will appear in the program guide, as well as limit social interaction. So when the child is viewing the personalized program guide, Nintendo TVii displays content that is appropriate to the content ratings.

Yeah, this is great, because one of the things that we learned with our relationship with Netflix, for example, is Netflix for Kids was such a huge driver for us on the Wii platform, that by having this mechanism that now my kids, in a very controlled way, can find the content they love and be able to engage with. That really is a powerful idea. Zach, one of the things that we talked about early on in terms of driving of vision for the product and the service was this idea of making every TV a smart TV and creating, effectively, a super remote. Touch on that a little bit in terms of why that's a powerful idea and why that was guiding us as we created Nintendo TVii.

Nintendo TVii's remote functionality delivers simplicity by offering control that spans the areas that Brad mentioned earlier: controlling linear TV, controlling your DVR, and being able to launch a video application and arrive at your desired program. So it's this super remote control that spans your cable or satellite box, your DVR, and Wii U applications.<img aria-hidden="true" src="https://assets.nintendo.com/image/upload/f_auto/q_auto/dpr_auto/Microsites/iwata-asks/wiiu/reggieasks/photo12" class="photo">

Great. Masaki, as someone who worked on the technical aspects, anything else to add?

He pretty much covered it very well. This is about providing a one-stop shop for everyone watching TV. It's super easy and fun.

Game Changer

So in closing, a question I'd love each of you to answer, as you prepare to be with family and friends this holiday, and with Nintendo TVii up and running, what is it that you are most looking forward to in terms of showing off this great new experience with family and friends?

It's the holiday bowl games. It's all about that. In our household, with the extended family, we have our favorite teams and it'll be fun to be able to watch these games from our respective households. We're now able to share with each other what we're experiencing, and a little trash talk will happen between households even though we're miles apart.<img aria-hidden="true" src="https://assets.nintendo.com/image/upload/f_auto/q_auto/dpr_auto/Microsites/iwata-asks/wiiu/reggieasks/photo13" class="photo">

Well, you could then go from Nintendo TVii to Wii U Chat and do a little video chat as well.

That's great. Masaki, how about for you? What are you most looking forward to doing with family using Nintendo TVii?

I'm really looking forward to being able to start using TV Tag. This is a very unique, very new experience we are providing to the North American market. I'm a social media junkie, so I can't just wait to have another hangout place in technology.<img aria-hidden="true" src="https://assets.nintendo.com/image/upload/f_auto/q_auto/dpr_auto/Microsites/iwata-asks/wiiu/reggieasks/photo14" class="photo">

For me, it's also sports. Whether it's college football Saturday, March Madness, or Bowl season, I'm typically following just about every game I can follow even if I'm not watching it. So TV Tag really gives you that possibility where you can augment the experience of the game you're watching, but you can also be watching one game and following the progress of another game simultaneously. I'm also really looking forward to catching up on my favorite TV shows. I'm far behind because we've been very busy, so I'm looking forward to catching up on all those episodes. I'm excited to build my Nintendo TVii profile, and then quickly see how I can catch up – either by watching TV or by watching on the great Wii U video applications. I have a date with a few shows on AMC in particular.

Well, the other one for me is I'm a father of several children and one thing that I'm always concerned about is if my wife and I go out at night and we leave the kids at home, you know, primetime viewing is not what I want them to be browsing through. And so the ability to create a profile for my children and establish favorite shows and create some rating limits for them brings me a lot of peace of mind.

Right. That's great. So let me close by thanking each of you, not only for participating in this first "Reggie Asks," but also for the tremendous work that's been done. This project is something that has been a labor of love for all of us—the three of you from a developmental standpoint, certainly for me this is a program that I have been passionate for. And certainly, given my background from an entertainment perspective, I see how much of a game changer this can be, and so thank you for all of your efforts in bringing this to life, and thanks for participating in this very first "Reggie Asks."
